When life hands you a bushel of lemons.....

Well to say the least the last month of my life has been what I would consider a living hell. When Kailey got sick the first time we thought maybe it was just one of those things, then when everything seemed to be back to normal she presented with the same ill symptoms, sending us on yet another trip to the pediatrician. Hearing the first time was an ecoli problem, getting meds and thinking we would be in the clear again soon was a very false hope. Every few days she would be perfectly fine only to start vomitting and spiking fevers like no other. 2 weeks after our original start of all this, at the beginning of October, she came back positive again for ecoli. Again we thought with new meds we'd be just fine and all would go back to normal. A few days later she was playing and suddenly started screaming for daddy, said her boob hurt. Then she laid down only to vomit and spike yet another fever. After rushing her back to the pediatrician and having her fever spike even higher, they felt it necessary to give her an antibiotic injection. The test results came back as a severe kidney infection. We got to skip the IV this trip! We had to take her back the next morning and yet again she was perfectly normal. 2 days later she was asleep and coughed a little in her sleep then vomitted again. I took her temp to make sure she hadnt gone up since we checked it before bedtime. When I saw 104.6 on the thermometer I kept telling myself dont freak out just call the doctor. I had to wait for them to call back since it was 10pm. Within about 10 minutes they had called me back and told me without hesitation drive immediately to Primary Childrens Hospital, to pack a bag and not plan on coming home soon. So I frantically packed as quickly as I could what I felt would be necessary for Kailey and grabbed a couple things for myself. I called Jared at work and he decided to meet me at PCMC since he was at work and halfway there already. We arrived around 11:30pm the pediatrician had called ahead to help speed things up. Within an hour or so they had already told us she would be admitted for sure, but they needed to get some tests and see if they could find anything else out. They did an MRI on her to check her kidneys and make sure nothing drastic was going on. Just as the pediatrician predicted on the phone they found an abcess in the upper half of her right kidney. Kailey stayed up the entire time we were in the ER and even for a while after they admitted us and moved her upstairs. They gave her a popsicle and some grape juice and she was in heavan. At about 4:45AM they came in to start labs on her to obtain an inflamation level and get us to bed. They discussed some of the rules and gave Kailey her very own menu that she could order anything she wanted from all day long. They told her she could even have ice cream for breakfast, which prompted the statement to daddy of "Have you learned your lesson yet?" with a curious "about what?" reply from daddy Kailey quickly responded "see I can have ice cream for breakfast dad!" WIth a chuckle from everyone we heard the rest of the things we would be going through and when we woke up the next day we could get a tour of our floor and the Forever Young Zone.

The nurses and doctors were all really great to us and took exceptional care of Kailey. I dont think we could have asked for much more in a hospital stay. They were very accomodating and explained things very well to us. Even when we had to take Kailey down for what we thought was just an ultrasound of her kidney to see if they could safely remove the abcess. When we arrived she of course freaked out begging me not to let them do this to her. Surprisingly I held it together pretty well all week except for this part of it all. They couldnt see her kidney well enough to continue so we moved to the CT Lab and they let me hold her and love her as she continued freaking out. They anesthesiologist explained that the meds they were giving her tend to make kids giggly and wobbly asking that I secure her head safely so she didnt flop around. Right after that Jared peeked over my shoulder at her and she instantly started giggling which was awesome for me, it helped me stop crying and then I couldnt stop laughing. As I laid her limp little body down, we gave her kisses goodbye so they could do the little procedure. They rolled her over onto her tummy and sent us away. We sat waiting for nearly an hour for her. Watching Jared cry wondering what he had done wrong as a parent for this to happen to her was heart breaking for me. Hearing him talk about how hard it was to see her like that and that it scared him a little bit. When she arrived back in her room she asked me why I had two heads then said she saw 2 mommy's. We got a little video of this for future blackmailing purposes :) She finally came back to normal then started having pain but as usual refused medical treatment! After an hour of her screaming in pain and begging me to make it stop I told one of her nurses to please just come give her the pain medication. He was the best and told me it would take a minute or two and he would be back with the meds to help get her in a painfree state. It took about 15-20 minutes for the meds to hit her system fully and allow her to get some sleep. She slept for about 3 hours which was great for me. I got caught up on my update phone calls and was able to sleep with her for about an hour. When the doctors came in later to check on her they told us if she was doing good we could go home Thursday or Friday. We finally got word around 1pm Thursday that we would indeed be going home, they asked that we please fill her prescription there to ensure we had no issues in getting it at our local pharmacy. With that we started the process of packing everything and getting all the discharge work in order.

Kailey felt this was a vacation for her and I am so incredibly happy that she is on the road to recovery. Although we have several weeks before we may have her back to her normal full self and in the clear for future issues, we are grateful to be back home in our own bed.
I have added the pictures from PCMC on my Facebook Photo Albums. CLick the link below if you would like to see the photos.

  1. What a nightmare! I'm so glad she's doing better and you're all at home together.

At the same time you were in the hospital, I was too. I had a kidney stone that caused a kidney infection, which caused me to go into labor. We were able to stop the labor and I'm still recovering from the infection. Kidney pain is terrible and I cried as I read about Kailey's experience.

I've been updating my blog lately, so check it out at http://melsinbox.blogspot.com
